STS Hub Call for Fellows (2023-2024)

Viral Politics: From HIV to Covid-19

The Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Hub Fellowship Program offers SFSU faculty working at the intersection of science and social justice the opportunity to join a community of faculty scholars for the 2023-2024 academic year. Over the course of the year, Fellows will share scholarships, read and engage with the field of STS, and move toward collaborative research projects. The STS Hub invites faculty of all ranks (tenure track and lecturers) across the colleges.

We seek faculty with active research projects that critically engage with issues of science, technology, medicine, engineering, public health, the environment, and society. Accepted Fellows for the 2023-2024 cohort will receive a stipend of $1000 to participate in the STS Hub, with priority for funding given to junior faculty and lecture faculty, as well as members who have projects focused on our annual theme (below). Space is also available for unfunded Fellows from the SF Bay Area and beyond.

Our theme this year is Viral Politics: From HIV to Covid-19. The Covid-19 pandemic has revealed what STS scholars call an economization of life, where some lives are judged as less worthy and selectively limited or devalued so that others can flourish. These dynamics are familiar to those in San Francisco who have lived through the ongoing HIV/AIDS pandemic. This year the STS Hub considers viral politics in San Francisco and beyond, from STEM, humanities, social science, and artistic perspectives—making visible the continuities between HIV/AIDS, COVID-19, and other pandemics, past, present, and future. If you have new or ongoing projects that engage with “viral politics” broadly construed or if you have a teaching or professional development interest related to the theme, you are invited to apply. We hope to create a range of scholarship and public-facing research projects in conversation and collaboration.

Non-SFSU Scholars

Scholars located in the SF Bay Area are welcome to apply, along with U.S. and international scholars coming to the Bay Area with their own funding. International scholars must purchase SFSU health insurance, but no other costs are associated with a visiting scholar appointment at the STS Hub. Scholars at all levels (graduate students, postdocs, faculty, lecturer faculty, and independent scholars) are encouraged to apply. We are open to any length of stay between October 1, 2023, and May 1, 2023.
