Michelle Jungbluth, Ph.D., Adjunct Assistant Professor of Biology in the Estuary & Ocean Science Center at SFSU, has been awarded an NSF BioOce Program grant!

Dr. Jungbluth and collaborators at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and the University of Alaska Fairbanks will be investigating the winter and spring zooplankton community in the Gulf of Alaska by characterizing the diversity, development, feeding, and physiology of zooplankton, to elucidate which species are there, how many are there, where they are in the water column, and reveal indicators of their health to assess the potential impacts of shifting life cycles on broader marine food webs in the productive Gulf of Alaska ecosystem.

Fulbright Scholar Valerie Francisco-Menchavez

Professor Valerie Francisco-Menchavez (Sociology) has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to the Philippines for Research on Post-COVID-19 Migrations. In AY 22, Francisco-Menchavez will become the first College of Health and Social Sciences Assistant Dean for restorative and transformative racial justice.

Professor Francisco-Menchavez was a recipient of the Equitable Collaboration in STEM Scholarship hub in 2021-2022.

Professor Zena R. Mello Awarded $766k Grant

Professor Zena R. Mello (Psychology) has received a grant for $766,000 from the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program to conduct a mixed method study with high schools to determine how classism is associated with tobacco use.

Professor Mello was a contributor to the Equitable Collaboration in STEM Scholarship Hub in 2021-2022.

Professors Julietta Hua and Kasturi Ray (Women & Gender Studies) Co-Author a new book that takes on the gig economy: Spent behind the Wheel: Drivers' Labor in the Uber Economy (Minnesota Press).

Professor Hua is a steering committee member for the Science, Technology, and Society scholarship hub. Hua co-founded the Equity Research hub, serving as its inaugural year lead.

Professor Ray was a recipient of the Equity Research hub in 2021-2022.

Valerie Francisco-Menchavez named the College's first Assistant Dean for Restorative and Transformative Racial Justice

“Today, our world calls for urgent attention towards undoing oppression, restoring dignity and justice, and envisioning a new type of relations with one another,” Dr. Francisco-Menchavez said. “It calls us to take great care towards cultivating forms of racial justice, that is intertwined with intersectional analysis of power and oppression. To this end, I am thrilled to step into the role of assistant dean for restorative and transformative racial justice.”

New Book by Professor Martha Lincoln

Professor Martha Lincoln (Anthropology) published a new book examining the handling of public health epidemics in Vietnam and draws parallels to the experience of novel coronavirus in Asia and beyond. See Epidemic Politics in Contemporary Vietnam (Bloomsbury). 

Professor Lincoln is a steering committee member for the Science, technology and society scholarship hub; Lincoln served as co-lead of the STS hub in 2020-2021 following her fellowship year.
